While dermatologists are commonly associated with skin treatment such as cancer prevention and skin treatments, Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman appeared on WTSP Channel 10 News on Monday morning to show how his office?s new procedure is helping a young girl in a different way.

The clip introduces 11-year-old Zoe Cass, who is attempting to counteract her hair loss due to a rare autoimmune disorder called alopecia areta. The Tampa dermatologist has been treating her with targeted?PUVA (psoralen +UVA), narrowband?rays emitted from a hand-held UV device.

?Inflammatory cells are attacking the lower part of her hair shaft and causing her to lose her hair,? says the Tampa dermatologist. ?Hopefully the hair follicles that haven?t been completely destroyed, if they haven?t been attacked by the inflammatory cells, the UVA light is scaring them away?allowing her hair shaft to continue to grow hair, or to restart growing hair in those areas.?

Dr. Forman uses?the device Psoria-Light??to?deliver Deep UV LED targeted phototherapy treatment to patients with?UV treatable skin conditions.?Because of the Tampa dermatologist?s creativity in adopting this new technology to various ailments, Cass is?expected to?re-grow?much?of the hair she lost.
