Ryan Murphy Musical Attracts Top-Shelf Talent
Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Murphy walk into a restaurant and come out hours later with an idea for the craziest star-studded musical-comedy feature film this side of "Rock of Ages." It's not a terrible joke, but apparent Hollywood reality. As first reported by Deadline.com (and later confirmed by both EW.com and THR), the "Glee" creator is talking about teaming with three of Hollywood's biggest female stars, Beyonce and Andy Samberg (obviously) for "One Hit Wonders."
The musical would focus on three rival performers (Diaz, Witherspoon, Paltrow) who each had one successful single in the '90s; down on their luck, the trio joins forces as a way to get back into the spotlight. The idea is that Samberg and his Lonely Island troupe (Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) would write original music for "Wonders," while Beyonce's role is currently unknown. (If you like to believe Internet commenters, one wrote on Deadline.com that Blue Ivy's mama would play the woman who actually sang the three one-hits released by Diaz, Witherspoon and Paltrow's characters.)
While Paltrow and Witherspoon are noted for their strong singing voices (see Paltrow's work on "Glee" and in "Country Strong" and Witherspoon's role in "Walk the Line"), Diaz has been known throughout her career for a lack of vocal prowess. In "My Best Friend's Wedding," she famously shrieked through a karaoke version of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and in 2008 the actress told the Associated Press that she found performing live on stage "impossible."
Sony picked up Murphy's pitch for the comedy, though the studio hasn't confirmed deals with anyone just yet. Murphy previously worked with Paltrow on "Glee," and is busy with his adaptation of "The Normal Heart." Let's hope hell doesn't freeze over before this cuckoo-bananas production gets off the ground!

In the final weekend of campaigning before Tuesday's Michigan and Arizona primaries, Romney focused on central and southeast Michigan's urban and industrial centers in hopes of pulling ahead of Santorum.
With a Michigan victory, Santorum could solidify his place as a real threat to Romney heading into Super Tuesday, the 10-state sweepstakes on March 6. Santorum's victories so far have come in lower-turnout party caucuses.
While Romney kept most of his attention on the Democratic incumbent, he also worked to lay doubt about the core principles of his lightly funded main GOP rival.
Romney is the one facing stubborn doubts from some conservatives for his changed positions on social issues, but he tried to portray Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, as a Washington insider with cracks in his own conservative credentials. Santorum called such criticism "laughable" and said Michigan, where Romney was born and raised and his father was governor, was winnable.
A crowd in Lansing heard Romney accuse Santorum of caving to party leaders on issues he opposed, including financing Planned Parenthood.
"This is not time for lifelong pols who explain why they voted for this or that based on what they were asked to do by their fellow colleagues," Romney told about 300 activists gathered for breakfast at a country club. "I will be a president of principle."
Later in Flint, he declared himself a Washington, D.C., outsider and implied Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, is an insider: "I don't have any political payoffs I have to make."
Romney tried to undermine Santorum's profile as an abortion opponent by noting Santorum's backing in 1996 of fellow Pennsylvanian Arlen Specter in the GOP presidential race. "He supported the pro-choice candidate," Romney told more than 2,000 at a forum in Troy put on by a tea party umbrella group. Santorum spoke to the group, Americans for Prosperity, earlier Saturday.
Santorum, who has portrayed himself as a loyal conservative and is popular among evangelical conservatives, ridiculed Romney's claims.
"It is absolutely laughable to have a liberal governor of Massachusetts suggest that I am not a conservative," Santorum said to cheers to the same group. "He repeatedly gets up and says all these things that he didn't do that he did do. Folks, this is an issue of trust."
The volleys over principle and loyalty punctuate the all-out two-man race in Michigan, leaving behind the two others in the field. Both candidates are spending heavily on television advertising, although the better-funded Romney was laying out more.
Texas Rep. Ron Paul is hardly a factor in Michigan but is airing advertisements criticizing Santorum, which aids Romney. Paul was campaigning in Oklahoma on Saturday.
Romney campaigned across southern central and southeast Michigan, where his family name is familiar, and he reminded audiences of his ties to the state. Romney won the GOP primary here during his unsuccessful 2008 bid for the nomination.
Polls show a dead heat between Romney and Santorum. "This race is close. This race is winnable. But you've got to want it," Santorum told tea party members in St. Clair Shores.
Romney's attacks are a potential problem for Santorum because he's based his candidacy on presenting himself as an uncompromising conservative, contrasting himself with Romney. The former Massachusetts governor has struggled at times to explain why he's changed his position on abortion and other issues.
Santorum compared the health care bill Romney signed in Massachusetts in 2006 with the one Obama signed in 2010. The federal program is wildly unpopular with conservatives.

Cargill and Monsanto give thousands in campaign contributions to political figures, not including their effective lobbying abilities (Monsanto spent over $8 million lobbying in 2010 alone).
What?s more, these companies continue to demand enormous subsidies from the government. Not only do these subsidies perpetuate the dominance of agricultural monopolies, but they allow for the surplus dumping of food products overseas to developing nations. These developing nations see our products as cheaper alternatives to developing their own agricultural industries, and are also urged (often by law) to engage in foreign trade through IMF and World Bank economic?restructuring. In Egypt, for instance, loans from the IMF have mandated increased foreign investment and trade. As a result, the agriculture they do have is exported to Europe and the United States, and all other food products are imported. The exported goods create profits for a select few, while the rest of the country is mired in poverty due to food insecurity and volatile market prices ? precisely the cause of the Arab Spring!
Domestically AND internationally, big agriculture?s clout silences the voices of small, independent, organic farmers trying to grow healthy food at a reasonable price, and creates instability throughout the globe.?Maybe the #occupy movement should occupy Monsanto?s headquarters instead of Wall Street!

Assuming a simple interest rate of 8%, that amount would have now swelled to about RM840mil if the judgment were effected today. What could have made Danaharta lose that kind of money? And did it get anything in return?
Danaharta is the national debt management agency set up in the wake of the 1998 Asian financial crisis to sort out debt problems in the banking system and recover as much money as possible from borrowers.
It had filed a suit against Tajudin, a high-flying and favoured businessman, part of a group close to former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin , who at one time controlled Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and before that mobile telephone operator Celcom through his vehicle Technology Resources Industries Bhd (TRI) .
Tajudin got into serious debt and lost control of TRI and eventually sold his 32% stake in MAS back to the Government in 2001 at the same price he bought it several years back and much higher than the then market price, drawing heavy criticism. He had taken a loan of RM1.79bil to buy the stake in 1994.
Earlier this week, when the case came up for hearing before the Court of Appeal, it was disclosed that an out-of-court settlement was reached and basically that was that. The terms of the settlement were not made public, despite the case being of great public interest and the fact that Danaharta is publicly funded and has at least a moral duty to explain why it went for a settlement.
Predictably, the way this case has been disposed off has started tongues wagging and the rumour mill churning with much velocity. With important questions unanswered, serious questions over governance and accountability have risen to the fore and can only be detrimental for the country and its financial and capital markets.
As one lawyer pointed out, with the High Court judgement, Danaharta was no longer a plaintiff but a judgement debtor while Tajudin was a judgement creditor. At least it would have been prudent on Danaharta?s part to wait until the Court of Appeal had decided on Tajudin?s appeal.
In 2009, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered Tajudin to pay RM589mil to Danaharta following debts incurred when purchasing MAS shares. The amount was the balance from the RM1.79bil loan taken to purchase MAS.
The High Court ordered him to pay Danaharta at Dec 31 2005 the principal sum of RM589mil owed plus interest at 2% above Malayan Banking?s base lending rate from Jan 1 2006, until the loan was paid.
Tajudin made counter-claims amounting to some RM13.5bil. These claims are far in excess of the RM589mil in dispute, by over some 20 times. It was filed against 24 respondents, including former Danaharta chief executive Datuk Azman Yahya and former Danaharta officers Datuk Abdul Hamidy Hafiz , Datuk Zukri Samat and Datuk Kris Azman Abdullah .
He had claimed that Tun Mahathir Mohamad , who was Prime Minister then, had ordered him to buy the 32% stake in MAS to bail out Bank Negara Malaysia which had incurred foreign exchange losses. Mahathir denies this.
That?s the intriguing tale about this whole issue. It offers a lesson on how corporate Malaysia is run with its close interlinks between big business, Government and politics. It was a refreshing decision to see Danaharta turn around and pursue to the end creditors who have the means to repay their debts.

County coroner dies after fall

CINCINNATI -- The county coroner in Cincinnati has died, more than a week after he fell and injured his head.
Hamilton County Coroner Anant Bhati?died late Friday at University Hospital. Hospital officials declined to detail the cause of death, according to cincinnati.com.
The 71-year-old doctor had fallen outside the Westin Hotel Downtown on Feb. 8.
A native of Jodphur, India, Bhati had also been director of gynecology at Good Samaritan since 1980.?He delivered?thousands of babies at the hospital, according to cincinnati.com.

SAN DIEGO?? The deadliest prison blaze in a century has drawn attention to an unfortunate U.S. export to Central America: street gangs.
Prisons in Honduras and elsewhere in Central America are teeming with inmates who belong to gangs that have their roots in Southern California. Refugees of the region's civil wars sowed a new breed of violence on the streets of Los Angeles in the 1980s.
When the U.S. stepped up deportations of criminals in the 1990s, they brought their brutal habits with them to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, countries with weak law enforcement and an inadequate prison system. The result was growing violence among gang members, and widespread police abuse as authorities rounded up suspects for having gang-affiliated tattoos. Some, like many of the 355 killed in Tuesday's fire in Comayagua, were never even charged with a crime.
"It was just a perfect storm, where they arrived in a country that was unprepared and had no infrastructure," said Los Angeles police Detective Frank Flores, who has been battling U.S. gangs with Central American ties since 1999.
The victims of Tuesday's blaze were still being identified, and it was unclear exactly how many inmates had ties to U.S.-based gangs ? the most widely known being Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, and 18th Street. But a Honduran government report, which was sent to the United Nations this month, said 57 percent of some 800 inmates of the Comayagua farm prison north of the Central American country's capital were either awaiting trial or being held as suspected gang members.
Alberto Mendoza, an inmate who survived the blaze, said Thursday that members of the MS-13 and 18th Street gangs got along well at the prison. He described himself as a former 18th Street member.
"We are part of the same community here, not enemies," the 32-year-old Mendoza said. "(Gangs) are part of the past. If someone brings it up, we send a message and they don't bring it up again."
The gangs haven't just spread from Los Angeles to Central America. They have spread throughout the United States.
The MS-13 has an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 members and associate members worldwide, including 8,000 to 10,000 in the United States, according to the FBI's most recent National Gang Threat Assessment in 2009. Its "cliques" operate in the Atlanta, Dallas and Washington, D.C., areas.
The 18th Street gang is believed to have about the same numbers, with a presence in 44 U.S. cities spanning 20 states, according the FBI.
When the Central Americans arrived in Los Angeles, the newcomers joined to protect their own from already established gangs.

Flores believes their exposure to the atrocities of war back home may have made them more prone to violence.
Jorja Leap, a professor of social welfare at University of California, Los Angeles, said the Central American gangs are unusually violent, slitting tongues of snitches and placing them on their corpses.
"These are gangs that are even feared among gangs," said Leap, who has studied them extensively. "The feds work very hard to deal with them, but they're pernicious. They're like Medusa. You lop off a head, and another grows back."
MS-13 members initiate newcomers by pummeling them for 13 seconds, a ritual known as being "jumped in."
Gang members adorn themselves with elaborate tattoos from head to toe ? which make them into targets for government officials and others if they are deported to Central America.
